"Solstice" - 5
Am back at this, having been interrupted on several matters, one of which is getting my old pc back, with the photos, but missing the documents for now, and bookmarks [which are being slowly retrieved as remember them - when get a screen for the other, the Compaq, will then be able to transfer all from there to here, which will help immensely]
and as can be guessed, this is actually being worked on upside down, not as seen here - using antelope brown and crow quill nib...

All but the back wall is now finished... sap green on the leaves of the holly and xmas cactus, scarlet on the berries and floral, along with white, antelope brown on the shelf and under, and a layering of emerald green over the sap green of the xmas cactus leaves....

"Solstice" - 2
Continuing with the grisaille, have just the rest of the bowl to stipple in before it is finished, and glazing colors can begin... the process of using just the acrylic paint instead of the ink ,akes for going slower, but it still progresses, and will see how it looks once glazing is ongoing...

"Solstice" - 1
This is an experimental work - while am using the pens and nibs, am using the acrylic paint from the tube [in this case pthalo blue] and diluted with the water from the pen... the basic reason being that there are many more colors to choose from...
Progress on this is slower than had hoped, as the paint, even diluted, does not lend itself to the swiftness in application that the ink does - but progress there is, so am carrying on with it to see how, when the time comes for glazing, it ends up...
All in all, tho, think will go back to the regular acrylic inks after this, and seek to do with blending what colors are available to make the wanted ones... what will, however, be added, is what will be doing here - layering clear gloss medium between the layers as means of adding the luminescence once gotten when used just the paints in my artistic endeavors...

"Au Paired"
Having finished my 'monster' painting, FUGUE, have turned to doing a small piece during breaks from catching up on my reading.......... as can be seen, is a work in progress, and here showing several degrees of the progress from the prussian blue grisaille...
Am using light green abd emerald green for the leaves, with some lemon yellow on the light fringes, and sepia on the dark side where is turning to woodiness... the rock is flesh and antelope brown, and the base of the support is red earth and antelope brown... the flower is to be scarlet, if can get the lid off the bottle, and white streaks on the lit parts of the petals..... the tray will be red earth...

Colored Ballpoint Painting
A Portugal based lawyer who does art on the side is Samuel Silva, whose terrifically done colored ink ballpoint works deserve better than to be called drawings... while it seems he limits mostly to an A2 size, yet he does very well in the diversity of subject matter, even as he seems to primarily work from photographs...
It is good that there are others who do more than present sketches and simple drawings, instead elevating their rendering to a Fine Art format...

FUGUE - 25
And have JUST finished the main part of the painting... now, as soon as the ink is dry, will cut the 9 feet from the roll and begin doing the wires and birds, the final bit left...........
FUGUE - 24
Because of the length of time it took doing these remaining bamboo [and still not quite done], am including these as additional updates... note the complexity of the thicket of bamboo, which was what took so long to get done - as is seen in the closeup, they are not straight, but wonky, thus needing more care in tracing down their positions from in front, behind, and so forth... the remaining ones, along with the rest of the lower vegetation, about 9 inches or to a foot, will be worked on sometime Thursday afternoon, and hopefully all will be finally done save the birds and wires...

FUGUE - 23
The next-to-last update on this, as hope to have it finally finished by end of the week... had hoped to do so last week, but ran out of ink Friday eve, so had to wait until today to get another bottle of F W Black acrylic ink... for those who not knew from older postings, am using crow quill nibs and a staff - not know just which this one is, as is worn down from the usage, but has served well in getting the fence wood grains and detailing of the plants.....and this is the second nib usedon this, but considering the roughness of the canvas roll and the painting area [3'x8'], am pleased...

FUGUE - 22
I see have forgotten to upload this photo... am now, tho, further along, indeed almost done with it, just needing to detail a few more bamboo and get the wires and birds in...

FUGUE - 21
Moving along... will have to do a few sketches of lizards before deciding just what or where to put them... and may have to go over the wood more to bring out the bamboo contrasting more, as well as adding white to the highlights...

FUGUE - 19
the ending of FUGUE is now in sight, finally - tho the fence is not yet inked, nor the next stage of fuguing - the knots - are set... but since this has been done from left to right, despite my being left-handed, thus taking more time as the inked parts need to be fully dry before moving along to avoid smearing, it now can commence from the end to the left, making for less time spent on it...

FUGUE - 18
tired of trying to find others to hold the canvas for a photo shoot, decided to try hanging from the wall [without killing myself - and, surprisingly, was sucessful]...

a question was raised to me as to what a fugue is - so -
what a fugue is - [from Webster] -
a : a musical composition in which one or two themes are repeated or imitated by successively entering voices and contrapuntally developed in a continuous interweaving of the voice parts
b : something that resembles a fugue especially in interweaving repetitive elements

FUGUE - 14
working the ground outlining to the right end, then will detail, then get back to the fence and vegetation...

FUGUE - 13
The cluster of bamboo is now outlined, and am going on with outlining the rest of the ground to the right end of the work... the bit of fence which can be seen among the bamboo will then be filled in, as well as the rest of the fence vegetation, when the ground is detailed - the wires and birds being the last to get put in...

FUGUE - 12
FINALLY finished detailing the ground area on this section... now can get on with the bamboo in front of the fence...
Tomorrow will measure out the remainder of this, to the 8 feet line, so to know how much is left, and to plan the fugue aspects to their finality...

Anniversary
Today is the third anniversary of this blog... so am re-running its opening, to re-establish why it came into being..........
First Thoughts...
One
of the things which I hope to see here is taking an old art form, ink,
and elevating it to more than mere sketches and even drawings, which in
general are means to ends - and instead have the ink works be as ends in
themselves, Fine Art in other words, finished works that stand on their
own... to a degree, this was accomplished near the end of the 19th
century as illustrators began flourishing and works by such artists as
Howard Pyle, Franklin Booth and Joseph Clement Coll plied their
expertise and imagination - but there is a difference between
illustration and fine art, similar as they may be, namely that
illustrating is a means to the end of showing visualizations of
particular tales in such as books or magazines, not, as Fine Art per
se... however, by the same score, many of what passes as Fine Art also
in effect illustrated - myths, portraits, visual recordings of areas,
animals, objects and so forth... so the line is blurred, in part
because little attention had been paid to seeking to understand the
nature of Fine Art and why it differs from pre-photographic recordings,
or propaganda posters, or decorative art - especially this latter...
hopefully, in time, a collection of these Fine Art renderings can be
gathered and exhibited and in their viewing help establish the high
quality of composition, inventiveness, and skill that goes into their
creations - and as such be seen for the Fine Art works they really
are...
In the Beginning...
This
is an opening declaration of fellow ink artists to elevating pen and
ink works to the appreciation of fine art... to begin, here is an
example - "Mother Lode", 32"x40" -
