For those interested, this is how am keeping 'on track' with doing the wood grain........

 And am almost there...  just 'pushing the values' a bit more and tightening up here and there - and be finished!

Coming into the home stretch, am now on the crate slats... then detailing that, then adding the shadows, then pushing the values - and it will finally be completed...

Making progress on texturing the meat, and hope to be getting to the wood under the plastic bag shortly, and get the light reflections looking more like correct...

By enlarging the photo, the details of how am making the texture becomes more visable...

Unicorn Continued

I wasn't sure how I was going to place her horn, so I took a thin piece of paper and placed it over my painting. This way, I would not draw and erase on the good hot press many times over, which would ruin the paper.

Since I now had her horn placed on her forehead, it was time to start the back ground. This is the first under layer of color but I had a problem. Using Derwent watercolor pencils makes it nigh on impossible to do large areas of color well.

Rarely do I put watercolor pencil to paper but in the case I would have too. So I used the side of the pencil and slowly did circular motions with various colors onto the hot press paper.

Then I very carefully... with a couple of small brushes, added the smallest amount water to the pigment. Using a circular motion again so I can create the Monet type background I was looking for.

The Icelandic Unicorn is coming along slowly. I have added the gold leaf ink on the horn but still have to do some highlights on it. Have starting working on her mane, trying to make it as free flowing as possible. Background is a bit brighter than it is in person due to the flash.

Just a shot of my Artist's desk with the latest painting on it, looking out to one of my horse pastures. In this photo, it is too hard to see my mini Mare laying down with the lambs. An inspiring and peaceful place to work.

The canister is now done... so - on to the rest of the rendering, getting the bagged meat w/the wood of the crate seen thru the plastic....

And the issue of what roadkill to use is now revealed - it is 'roadkill' from a store...

So - the question remains - why not the other, more expected or usual?  to begin with, consider the theme/title, and context it with my known sense of life...  if I were most any other artist, there's be nothing odd of using a pigeon, or rat, or even a puppy as roadkill examples, because it would almost had been expected - for an ordinary person, those WOULD be typical roadkill...  but as all objects used in a work of art are, by the fact they are included, symbolic of particular importances [otherwise, why bother putting them in], even if the reason of the importance is not consciously articulated [ it is in the nature of composing a world of art]...   what, then, is being said if a pigeon was used, or including a rat as well - what sense of life is thus being portrayed - and further, what such if considering a puppy to use [and dog meat, for many in the Far East, is a delicacy, tasty, and when used in stew, makes for a delicious nutritious meal]?   

So, then - what difference is being emphasized when using a packaged meat as the protein?  it is, after all, since one needs be 'on the road' to get it, a form of 'roadkill'?  further, how does this more fit into the theme/title, as opposed to the traditional roadkill?  an improvement? or just different?
